Overview
This update addresses several buffer overrun vulnerabilities in all Microsoft Office 2001 programs. It also addresses an issue that affects the use of Japanese characters in Excel worksheets, and it introduces an improvement to the method used by Word and Excel to apply encryption to password-protected documents.
Applies to: All editions of Office 2001, including Word + Entourage 2001 Special Edition, all standalone versions (Microsoft Word 2001, Microsoft Excel 2001, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2001), and all service releases.
Before you install this update, make sure that Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Security Update (9.0.5) is installed on your computer. To verify the version number, select any Office 2001 program in the Finder, and then on the File menu, click Get Info.
In addition, your computer must meet the following minimum requirements: Operating system: Mac OS 8.1 to 9.2.2. Hard disk: 83 MB of available hard disk space.
Tip If you're not sure whether your computer meets these requirements, you can display information about your computer by using the Apple System Profiler program included with the Mac OS. To start the program, click Apple System Profiler on the Apple menu.
To use all of the features available in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Security Update (9.0.6), we recommend that you also have access to the Internet through either an Internet service provider (ISP) or a network.
Make sure that Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Security Update (9.0.5) is installed on your computer. To verify the version number, select any Office 2001 program in the Finder, and then on the File menu, click Get Info.
Quit any other programs that are running, including virus-protection programs, because they might interfere with installation.
Make sure Allume Systems StuffIt Expander version 6 or later is installed on your computer. If an earlier version of StuffIt Expander is installed on your computer, you might not be able to install this software.

In the table below, click the file format you want. Note: Two different file types are available for this download, MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx). A .bin file is typically smaller than an .hqx file, but is less compatible with earlier Macintosh systems, such as Mac OS 7.0, 8.0, and 8.5. An .hqx file is typically larger, but is more compatible with earlier systems.
Follow the instructions on the screen to save the file to your hard disk.
If you are using Internet Explorer, the Download Manager saves the file to the desktop unless you specified a different download folder on the Download Options pane in the Preferences dialog box.
On your hard disk, double-click the file that you downloaded in step 4 to expand it.
Depending on the Web browser that you are currently using, this step might be performed for you automatically.
Double-click the Office 2001 9.0.6 Update icon to start the setup program and then follow the instructions on the screen.
If you use Office Reminders, start Word 2001 or Entourage 2001 after the installation has been completed so that you will continue to receive your reminders.
To remove this update
The Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Security Update (9.0.6) does not include an uninstall feature. To restore your Office 2001 programs to their original state, delete them from your hard disk, and then reinstall them from your Office 2001 CD-ROM.
