Network requirements

The following table lists the minimum network requirements for client/server connections in a Microsoft Dynamics AX system.

ValueApplication Object Server (AOS)Database

Bandwidth (b)

100 megabits per second (Mbps)

100 Mbps

Latency (l)

Less than 5 milliseconds

Less than 5 milliseconds

The total response time for running a task in Microsoft Dynamics AX can be expressed by the following formula:

Response time = (Number of calls to and from the server * l) + Number of bytes sent/b

We recommend that you consider the following types of connections when planning your system:

For a system that uses a local area network (LAN), connect directly through a Microsoft Dynamics AX client.

For a system that uses a wide area network (WAN), connect using Windows Terminal Services or another remote connection product. Review the guidelines for deploying Terminal Services to determine the number of WAN connections you will need.

Must be case-insensitive

Must match the Microsoft Windows locale of the computers running instances of Application Object Server (AOS).

If you are setting up a new Microsoft Dynamics AX installation, we recommend that you choose a Windows collation, rather than a SQL collation.

Oracle Database versions supported
Microsoft Dynamics AX supports Oracle Database 10g. Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 Service Pack 2 supports the 64-bit version of Oracle Database 10g.

Note: For new implementations of Microsoft Dynamics AX, we recommend that customers using an Oracle database run on a Windows operating system. Oracle running on Unix is supported for issues that we can reproduce when Oracle is running on a Windows operating system. In future versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX, Oracle running on Unix will not be supported.

Authentication requirements

Microsoft Dynamics AX requires that the database use Windows Authentication to authenticate users.

For Oracle, be sure you that have installed and configured the Windows native authentication adapter. See your Oracle documentation for details.
