Newsgroup setup instructions

Updated: April 4, 2005

Accessing newsgroups is simple. There's nothing to install and nothing to configure. Once you're in the door, you're free to browse to your heart's content. You can access the Microsoft Dynamics Community newsgroups in two different ways:

Through the Microsoft Web-based newsgroup reader

Through a Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) newsreader such as Microsoft Outlook Express

To learn more about Web-based versus NNTP newsreaders, visit the choosing a newsreader page.

Using the Microsoft Web-based newsgroup reader

We recommend accessing newsgroups with the Microsoft Web-based newsgroup reader. Simply sign in with your .NET Passport account. Then begin posting your questions and replies to the newsgroup.

Why the sign-in rule? Signing in to the Microsoft Web-based newsgroup reader gives you several advantages over using an NNTP newsreader:

Protection against spam: E-mail spammers and spam bots are prevented from signing in to the Microsoft Web-based newsgroup reader. This means they can't scour newsgroups looking for your e-mail address.

Better user interface and easier navigation: Because this newsgroup reader is Web-based, you can post, search for, read, and reply to discussion group messages directly from your Web browser.

Ability to rate individual posts: One of the coolest features of this Web-based newsgroup interface is that you can vote on whether you found an individual post helpful. Just select the "Yes" or "No" button.

Using Outlook Express

To access newsgroups with Outlook Express, follow these steps:

1.

Print out this page for easy reference as you go through the steps.

2.

Launch Outlook Express, which is installed with Microsoft Windows XP. You may be asked whether you want to make Outlook Express your default e-mail program. If you haven't installed Windows XP yet, you can download Outlook Express from the Internet Explorer Downloads page. (You will need to download and install Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.)

3.

In the Tools menu in Outlook Express, select Accounts.

4.

In the Internet Account dialog box, select Add, and click News.

5.

In the Internet Connection Wizard that appears, type your name in the Display name field, and then click Next. Type your e-mail address in the E-mail address field, and then click Next.

6.

Type msnews.microsoft.com in the News (NNTP) Server field.

7.

Click Next. Click Finish, and then click Close.

8.

When asked, "Would you like to download newsgroups from the news server you added?" click Yes.

9.

In the Newsgroup Subscriptions dialog box, type the name of the Microsoft Dynamics newsgroup you would like to view. (See the list of the Microsoft Dynamics products and their corresponding newsgroup names after this step.) Click the name of the newsgroup you're interested in, then click Subscribe, and you're ready to go.
