"Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, offers cutting-edge services that allowed Canadian trampolinist Rosie MacLennan and the country’s Paralympic men’s wheelchair basketball team to win gold at the London Olympics.” Debbie Low, President & CEO, CSIO
The Canadian Sport Institute Ontario is a member of a network of seven Sport centres across the country designed to enhance the daily training environment of Canada's high performance athletes and coaches. The centres were created by a unique national partnership between Sport Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Coaching Association of Canada (CAC).
The Ontario institute originally relied on service providers to deliver rehabilitative focused services, like massage, physiotherapy and chiropractic. But as it grew, providing more in-house Sport Science services and partnered with more National Sport Organizations (NSOs) and Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs), it became apparent that the departments and data were becoming increasingly siloed. “Our staff would have to enter the same coach or athlete information into the different databases that each of the various departments used to record and monitor their data.”
comments Director of Business Operations at CSIO, Robin Witty. “The staff’s view was compartmentalized and restricted by the silos and we very much wanted to provide a holistic view of the coach and athlete and all the services and programs they were connected to here at CSIO.”
The mission of the CSIO is the pursuit of excellence by providing world-class programs, services, and leadership to high performance athletes and coaches to enhance their ability to achieve international podium performances. They needed a better way of managing the information in order to fulfill it.
What was needed was a scalable, flexible and cost effective data management solution which was easy to use and access, and also integrated into the existing IT infrastructure of the CSIO. The Solution
“We had been using Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 with a SharePoint portal for coaches but felt that there was a greater, and much wider potential for it. When we started to look around at a solution we could use to help us achieve this, we reviewed what was out in the market but came back to Microsoft Dynamics, but to the latest version, 2011.” says Witty.
|CRM System||Dynamics CRM|
|Desktop Systems||Microsoft Office|
|Deployment Strategy||Partner Hosted (private cloud)|
From the outset the team at CSIO had a clear vision of what they wanted from their new solution including:
1. the flexibility to configure and personalise it as new requirements arose
2. one central repository for all athlete and coach information
3. the ability to quickly and easily extract the information
4. a cost effective solution and deployment options that met their budget
Partnering with Microsoft Canada’s 2012 Dynamics CRM Partner of the Year, Altus Dynamics, they were able to automate the vast majority of the tasks associated with maintaining and working with athletes and coaches. New entities were added that allow the solution to capture all of the athlete test results and to capture and help plan coaching courses and results. CSIO also wanted to include in the database, historical game results for athletes to monitor performance over time which Altus Dynamics was able to accomplish by using the data import functionality within Microsoft Dynamics CRM. They now they have one central system with all of the required data for all athletes over the last 10 years.
The Benefits “Staff see the capability of CRM, and want to make sure all their work is captured there. It’s very exciting for me to know that Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Altus can do everything they are asking of it. It’s re-assuring to know we have the right product and the right partner.”

says Witty. Single Version of the Truth
The services of the CSIO are athlete-centric and now so too is their database, presenting a unified view of the athlete and all the data that surrounds them. “ One can think of the athlete data as a cube that can be spun around depending on who is looking at or inputting the data.”
says VP of Product Innovation at Altus Dynamics, James Faw. Integration “The decision to stay with a Microsoft solution showed their foresight and strategic vision. The rest of their stack was all Microsoft based including SQL Server, Office, Exchange and Windows’ Servers. And in the end, they had much better integration amongst all of their products because they chose to use Dynamics CRM 2011”
This new solution is also now fully integrated with Microsoft Outlook with a future potential to integrate it with their current accounting system, adding further benefits. Reporting “We will now have the ability to report to our funders and other stakeholders in a timely and efficient way thanks to Dynamics CRM 2011. The removal of the previous highly manual processes will free up our time to focus on what the CSIO is all about – providing the services and support to athletes and trainers to achieve more podium places for Canada in the future.”
