Supply chain: U.S. how Reynolds managed inventory amid crisis

Staci Kusterbeck, October 1, 2006

"In early 2004, just after it filed for bankruptcy, Reynolds began looking for a new retail system to cut operating costs while managing the needs of its remaining stores. 'We needed a system that would manage inventory across our stores and allow us to save money on our maintenance contract,' says Bozzetti. 'I had six months to come up with a solution.' After evaluating two other systems, the retailer selected Microsoft [Dynamics] Retail Management System (RMS), partly because the Windows-based platform allowed for significant savings in maintenance compared to the UNIX system. Reynolds implemented the system on its own, with training provided by Chicago-based Sales Catalyst. At the time, Reynolds had 150 employees. Three [information technology] IT employees set up the hardware and software, and then buyers and management started using it to manage inventory, products, and SKUs."

"This specialty retailer transitioned from error-prone manual processes and stacks of outdated spreadsheets to turn-key automation that maximizes real-time sales data. In a word, the executives at Minneapolis, MN-based Kuhlman Co. used to have a major mess on their hands when it came to managing the flow of merchandise for their business as a fast-growing specialty retailer and wholesale provider. They kept track of how many items were sold by sorting through a stack of spreadsheets, or by telephoning sales clerks and asking them to count how many pieces of a particular style of shirt were left on the racks. Moreover, busy staff and managers often reported sales and requests for merchandise transfers days after the fact."

"Kiosks, cell phones, ESLs satisfy time-starved shoppers. Retailers have traditionally committed significant dollars to advertising, marketing, and promotional events to lure consumers into their stores. But the traditional methods may no longer be sufficient to get and keep an increasing number of time-starved customers. In response retailers are working to improve the customer experience, often with the use of advanced selling devices and tactics. Food Lion's new Bloom concept, which is centered around improving the customer experience, is a prime example."
