Questions about the compatibility issue in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Editor’s note: The questions in this section refer to an issue that impacts users of Microsoft Dynamics RMS who use Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). At the time of the chat, fixes were not yet available, but both XP and Vista updates are now available. View the Knowledge Base article about this issue and download the updates here.

Q: I saw an item in the Forum warning about Windows XP SP3 and RMS V2. Does that hold for those still on 1.3?
A: Thanks for your question. Yes; the incompatibility issue affects all versions of Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System Store Operations and Headquarters. If you use RMS, Microsoft recommends that you do not install XP SP3 or Vista SP1 until a final tested fix is made available.

Q: I have a follow up question on SP3. In my back office, I use a Vista SP1 system to connect to the RMS 2.0 database in our front office (running on XP SP2). I mainly use Manager (to work on items). Is there any danger using my Vista SP1 system?
A: Thank you for your question. Microsoft recommends that you do not install XP SP3 or Vista SP1 on any machine in the Microsoft Dynamics RMS environment. It is recommended that you uninstall SP1 from the Vista box until a final tested fix is made public. If you have any concerns about your data, please contact customer support.

Questions about future releases

Q: Where do things stand on RMS V3?
A: At this time, release 3.0 is under development. More information about the release date will be made public as soon as possible.

Q: Hopefully in V3 one thing done will be to get away from exact machine licensing and back to more of a "pool" licensing. It is very frustrating to get a "new" license key simply because I switch out a system or have to reinstall. It also makes you eat a license just to have a test machine that you very rarely use.
A: We have been listening to the feedback we received on the licensing changes in RMS 2.0, but at this point cannot provide details of the changes coming in v3.

Q: Follow up on version 3.0. What's the current timeline to have it ready? Initial release date was Q1 2008. And further, when does the beta testing start?
A: We are not able to comment on the release date. Closed testing of an early beta release is under way.

Q: I had checked with my partner but they don't have any dates yet, then on the other hand somebody on the POS forum posted that some bigger customers already do beta testing. Yet, you mentioned you are still developing it.
A: Yes, development continues during Beta testing.
