Innovative Schools
Innovative schools around the world are discovering ways to make education more
engaging, inspiring, and relevant to the world in which our students live—and the
world they will influence for years to come. Through best practices based on current
research findings and shared experiences and goals, these schools move beyond the
limits of the classroom and traditional learning models. Each takes a unique approach
to serving the needs of its community—all work to ignite students’ natural desire
to learn and prepare them for success in today’s evolving global economy.
Microsoft’s Innovative Schools program works collaboratively with 12 schools from
around the world to provide intellectual property, technology expertise, experiential
knowledge, and the support of our community. We’ve brought together leaders in education,
such as SRI International and the University of Washington’s College of Education,
to work closely with the schools and facilitate decision making by providing knowledge,
research, and expertise.
These innovative schools are at work today, creating best practice where research-inspired
learning principles and best-in-class technologies are put to the test and refined—offering
scalable lessons for education communities everywhere.

The Innovative Schools 6i Process provides an effective framework for decision making
that guides schools in finding the right answers. There is no single blueprint to
serve all educational communities, but the 6i Process can frame conversations about
reform—and how it can work in your community.
The 6i Process
Developed through work with schools around the globe, the 6i Process includes Introspection,
Investigation, Inclusion, Innovation, Implementation, and Insight.
