Students will practice retelling the different events in the correct sequence.

How to begin

1.

Ask students if they had milk today with their breakfast. Do they know where that milk came from? Do any of them have cows at home? How do we get the milk we drink every day?

2.

Have students take an online tour to find out the answers to these questions.

Student directions This Microsoft Office Word document can be opened with Office File Viewers. Save this document to your classroom computers. Adjust the directions as needed for your lesson. When presenting your lesson to the students, have them use the student directions sheet as a jump point into the activity.

Flow chart sample This Microsoft Office Visio file can be opened with the Visio Viewer 2003, a download from the Microsoft Office Online Web site.

Description

Do you ever wonder how milk gets from cows to your table? In this activity, you will take an online tour that shows the steps from the cows that produce the milk, to the milk that you drink.

Software: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Visio

What to do

Take an online tour of the story of milk

1.

Open Internet Explorer and go to the Story of Milk Web site.

2.

Together with your class, read about the different steps that are needed to get the milk from the cow to you.

3.

Listen carefully to the steps so you can remember what happens in the correct order.

Ways to extend the student activity

Students can draw pictures for each of the events.

Students can review the frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the Web site and take the online quiz.

Assessment

Use the flow chart provided with this lesson for assessment. It shows the events from the online tour, but the words for each event are left blank. Students can fill in the blanks with the words that are provided.
