After reading A House for Hermit Crab, written by Eric Carle, students complete concept maps about the story. Students then research sea creatures or other sea elements and create multimedia presentations to demonstrate what they’ve learned. Preparing and presenting concept maps and multimedia presentations helps students gain confidence with the material, and the technology provides the students with an excellent visual means to synthesize their learning.

“When first asked to recall the story, the children could only remember 1 or 2 details. As we began asking them questions and putting boxes on the screen with the concept map...each student wanted to think of something so that he or she could have a box on the screen. This prompted them to really think about the story and come up with more details.”

Mandy Bryan, Indiana State University
