Making Science Movies
Updated: April 6, 2004
Student teams use a digital camcorder and movie editing software to create a movie about a scientific topic. Creating a movie is a complex process that requires students to create concrete representations of abstract ideas by using their own modes of expression. During the project, students hone critical skills such as project management, research, organization, presentation, and reflection skills.
“Prompting students to create a movie requires that they engage higher order thinking skills and gain an understanding deep enough to explain it to others through the movie medium. The movie also serves as a natural assessment tool to gauge students’ understanding.”
Athena A. Maikish, Teacher’s College Columbia University
