Dutch Primary Schools’ Thirst for Knowledge Satisfied by Gateway Competence Centre
When Microsoft launched the Learning Gateway framework in the Netherlands, there was great interest from the primary school sector. To satisfy the demand for further information, APS IT Services developed the Learning Gateway Competence Centre. This is a Web portal, based on Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Portal Server 2003, where interested educators and school staff can find information and share experiences. An online demonstration version of Learning Gateway helps users get a feel for how it works. Some schools have taken this further, by joining a pilot to explore certain aspects in more detail. This has helped primary schools improve their understanding of what the Learning Gateway framework is, and how it can meet their specific needs.

Perm Municipal Education and Science Committee Increases Staff Productivity Thanks To Collaborative Solution
The Perm Municipal Education and Science Committee is involved in managing and controlling educational establishments in the city of Perm, Russia. It wanted to enable its staff to collaborate and work together more effectively regardless of department or physical location. In partnership with The Centre of Informational and Financial Technologies (CIFT), it implemented a collaborative document management system to meet these requirements. The system is based on a range of Microsoft® Windows® and Microsoft Office System technologies, including Windows® SharePoint® Services. It supports collaboration, the centralised planning of activities in the education sector, and the monitoring of performance.

Dutch Schools Implement Automated Student Administration Tool
Openbaar Onderwijs Almere is responsible for administering three state-run secondary schools that have 5,200 students and 700 staff. Recent legislative changes mean that the schools can no longer apply for funding using paper processes. Also, its legacy systems were unable to register students with the government’s automated administration system. They implemented SchoolVision, an application for school administration based on Microsoft Dynamics™ NAV. SchoolVision has several modules covering student administration, processing of marks and examination results, pupil absence, a pupil tracking system, and external reporting tools.

Free Software Offer Helps Child Internet Safety Web Site Promote Best Practice
The United Kingdom’s National Internet Safety Centre and Cyberspace Research Unit (CRU) at the University of Central Lancashire launched a new Web site to improve awareness of child Internet safety in February 2006. The site, www.internetsafetyzone.com, offers comprehensive advice for thousands of parents, educators, and children. After rejecting open source technology, CRU developed the online resource using Microsoft® Content Management Server 2002. Microsoft also donated technologies that support the site without charge as part of the Microsoft Citizenship initiative, Keeping Young People Safe Online.
