From
the Editor Only a few weeks ago, thousands
of developers and IT pros attended TechEd Europe
2005. I’m still jazzed by the enthusiasm attendees
showed for the upcoming releases of Visual Studio
and SQL Server. TechEd featured many speakers from
the product teams who have since then returned to
Redmond and are in their last stretch to launching
these products in the week of November 7th.
Having these people at the event also
provided an excellent opportunity to gather some
great technical content for this newsletter.
Kimberly L. Tripp has since years been one of the
top rated speakers at the event. Check out her
talk on SQL Server 2005 Indexing best practices
and gone are the days you thought indexing was a
boring topic. If you are more interested
in Office development, we have collected quite
some information on Visual Studio Tools for
Office. We’ve got a video clip and audio clip and
information in articles. This way you can get up
to speed on VSTO in your preferred way.
Currently, the Beta Experience has well
over 100.000 subscribers and feedback has been
great! If you have some feedback on the program,
good or bad, you can email thebeta@microsoft.com.
For technical feedback, check out the Product
Feedback Center. Thanks for spreading the word
on the Beta Experience and I hope to talk to you
again in the next edition of this newsletter which
will feature a big section on Visual Studio Team
System. Hans Verbeeck,
Developer & Platforms Group, Microsoft
EMEA Beta Experience Team

The
Visual Studio Beta Experience Caterpillar – is it
real?
When we released the first
Beta Experience visuals we were often asked whether this
caterpillar with its Visual Studio brand colours is real
or a fake. It is indeed real. We did not retouch
it. What appears to be a mascot for Visual Studio is the
4th or 5th instar larva of the North American Cecropia
Silkmoth (other species in that family are used as a
source of commercial silk). With a wingspan of 15 cm it
is the largest moth in North America and surely one of
the most beautiful (see picture). Its Latin name
“Cecropia” derives from Cecrops, the mythological king
of Attica and founder of Athens. Some of you
noted that the visual may resemble a “bug”. Although
zoologically not correct, there is a grain of truth in
it – this is a beta version and if you find any “bugs”
it will help us to make the final version even
better…
