The Imagine Cup Gallery and launch party took place on June 28 on the Microsoft Island on Second Life, an internet-based virtual world. Since opening in 2003, Second Life has grown to a total of more than 7,000,000 users who interact, socialise and trade through their avatar — the 3-D character they create to represent themselves. The Imagine Cup Gallery has been created to showcase winning student teams and their applications from the national Imagine Cup Software Design finals and to provide an interactive and social forum for Imagine Cup contestants to chat and hang out with other software design teams and like-minded individuals who share a common passion: technology. Students from Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), representing 24 countries, showcased their projects at the event and had their own avatars present to demonstrate their innovative projects using streaming video and image-animated presentations. And, of course, no launch party is complete without entertainment: Second Life musicians and popular artists performed at peak hours on June 28! The island will remain open until 3 August 2007. So what is next? We will host three additional events in Second Life for Imagine Cup Students, bloggers and media that will take place from 19.00-21.00 CET on July 12, 19, and 26, to wish the teams farewell before they head off to Korea. The goal of the events is to promote interaction among the student competitors and to provide additional opportunities to network, interact and share best practices. To attend the event, simply sign up for a Second Life ID and avatar, install the Second Life application and join us for the hottest student party in Second Life by teleporting to http://slurl.com/secondlife/10/128/64/24/. The island is at its most lively during the events, so we encourage you to join the party. For more details and instructions on how to get involved, surf the attached event materials.
