Microsoft GLF Europe 2006 Virtual Pressroom

Welcome to the virtual press room for Microsoft GLF Europe 2006. Government Leadership Forums are Microsoft-organised events that bring together representatives from governments and top businesses from around the world to set information, technology and community agendas, and to discuss how countries can streamline service delivery and empower their citizens through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT).

This year’s European GLF in Lisbon, Portugal, will focus on the theme of “Driving Global Competitiveness through Local Innovation”, and will examine the opportunities and challenges that leaders across the region are facing in the new global economy. In particular, attendees will discuss the European Commission’s mid-term report “Working Together for Growth & Jobs”, which proposes a series of reforms and steps that focus on delivering stronger, lasting growth and creating more and better jobs.

In addition, this GLF will specifically examine how ICT will play a fundamental role in both the public and private sectors as we collectively collaborate to enhance our local innovation ecosystems. The forum will feature four tracks: Knowledge Economy; Digital Learning in a Digital World; e-Government; and Skills for Employability, to promote discussion of the critical issues in formulating successful strategies that:
