The HOMEPLANE project builds a user-friendly platform connecting different devices within the home to support multimedia services. |
The reality of today and tomorrow is that our home networks are made up of a heterogeneous set of device and service technologies that need to work together to provide the best possible user experience. HOMEPLANE addresses these issues through innovative use of Web services technologies, quality of service, and user experience research. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) as part of the research program “Next Generation Media.” The consortium consisted of Siemens, IHP (a non-profit organisation and member of the Leibniz association Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics), the University of Dortmund, and Lintec, an innovative SME. The funding level was € 7.6 million; the estimated work was about 600 person months. The contribution of the European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC): The project is multimedia centric.
While the partners focused on quality of service research and new chip technologies for multimedia, our HomeFx team provided a variety of middleware components including network and device management for end user control and configuration.
This technology intended to help the user solve conflicts and problems.
In addition, the HomeFx team experimented with device-independent technology for programmatically presenting the user experience in a consistent way across a variety of devices.
Finally, we researched a recommender system as part of the project demonstrator. In summary, the project solved the following: - Connecting heterogeneous devices and services
- Enabling multimedia data transfer scenarios in wireless environments
- Providing a certain level of self diagnosis and healing for home networks
- Creating a great user experience through an easy-to-use user interface
- Demonstrating the system using an entertainment/infotainment recommender
