Building innovative mobile applications and services for the automotive after-sales market for remote diagnostics

MYCAREVENT was an Integrated project in the Sixth Framework Program.
The After Sales Market of the European Automotive Industry had become a very important market. The introduction of innovative mobile applications enabled new ways of working and collaboration among car manufacturers, workshops, road assistance services, and the customer, who will all benefit from this.
MYCAREVENT developed and implemented new applications and services, which can be seamlessly and securely accessed by mobile devices. They will provide manufacturer-specific car repair information according to the problems identified by the Off-/On-Board-Diagnosis systems.

Information needs to be presented in several languages, and the mobile worker needs to interact with the service portals of the car manufacturers and independent services while performing the repair of the car. By setting the requirements, MYCAREVENT fostered the aims of Block Exemption of the European Commission and supports the worker in coping with the increasing complexity of cars and their repair.
The project also provided for “Telematic” support for car drivers with self-services in situations where a little advice or a software fix is all that is needed.
The results are transferable to other industries that call for the remote services of manufactured consumer goods using pan-European technical standards.
MYCAREVENT is strongly supported by car manufacturers, independent and dependent workshops and road assistances services, software developers, diagnostic tool manufacturers, and leading academics for a sufficient coverage of the competences needed to perform such an integrated project successfully.
Telecommunications providers and mobile device manufacturers were brought into the project as dictated by the requirements detailed in the first stage.
MYCAREVENT worked with ISO to establish standards for collaboration in the automotive industry and support value creation by utilizing the potentials of mobile devices and the interoperable use of service portals.
Potential innovation areas are dynamic and secure software management for the car and advanced identity management. Additionally, the project contributed to the generation of know-how in the area of transient networks (always best connected) and workflow for remote car services. The outcome of the project is demonstrated in field trials across Europe.

The contribution of the European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC):

The European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC) focused on securing the MYCAREVENT Web services interactions across trust boundaries, and we validated and extended our dynamic Web services security approach to enable a dynamic MYCAREVENT eco-system, where the different stakeholders could keep control over their own automotive-related assets and configure fine-grained trust relationships and respective security and federation measures.
