Businesses can take a number of steps to reduce their carbon footprint and operate more efficiently, it has been claimed.
Kim Bryan, spokeswoman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, said companies need to look at where their energy is being lost.
She claimed that UK office buildings have an "appalling" record where energy efficiency is concerned.
"We lose a lot of energy through our roofs, through our walls, through poor installation, through bad draft proofing," Ms Bryan commented.
"The first thing to do is to get our buildings retro-fitted up to standard. Then after that we can use renewable energy sources to power them."
Businesses should get their buildings in order first and then consider the renewable energy sources that would fit through that building.
"There is an awful lot you can do as well in terms of how people get to work and leaving their computers on, people turning their lights off, heating can be on all the time in offices, so there are lots of things we can do in addition to installation and draft proofing," Ms Bryan stated.
"Also things like boilers, and water heaters [is an area] which people can reduce the use of energy."
