PC users wishing to enjoy the full range of features offered by Windows 8 have the option of making further upgrades once they have installed the new operating system. If you currently have a computer running Windows 8 standard edition, then it is relatively straightforward to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (Professional). This allows users to connect and share files, access company networks, encrypt sensitive data and carry out a range of more advanced tasks - potentially unlocking additional productivity.
Windows 8 Pro offers enhanced data protection with BitLocker and BitLocker To Go, helping to keep your confidential information secure. It also allows to you host a Remote Desktop Connection on your own computer, ensuring you can connect to it when using a different PC. And in addition, the Domain join option allows you to connect to your corporate network.
Who can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro?
To install Windows 8 Pro, you need to be running one of the following operating systems - Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview. After purchasing the upgrade, you will be prompted to run the Windows 8 setup, which guides you through the steps to download and install the upgrade.
Starting the upgrade process
Upgrading your Windows 8 operating system is a relatively straightforward process. Next, enter 'add features' to the search box, and then tap or click on 'settings'. Tap or click on 'add features to Windows 8'.
Entering the product key
At this stage of the process, you will be asked to enter a Windows 8 Pro product key. If you have already purchased the upgrade, and have the code available to hand, tap or click on 'I already have a product key'. Then simply enter the code and click 'next'.
If you are yet to buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade, this is not a problem. Simply tap or click on 'I want to buy a product key online', and follow the steps to make a purchase over the web. After completing your transaction, you will be forwarded the required code.
Completing the upgrade
After entering the product code, you will be prompted to read the license terms. After doing so, select the check box to accept these terms and then click 'add features'. Restart your computer - for existing Windows 8 users this will occur automatically - and Windows 8 Pro will be installed on your system, giving you access to a range of additional features.
