An increasing number of businesses are taking advantage of Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, it has been claimed.
Patrick Tarbitt, business manager for small business sector sales at Cisco UK and Ireland, said the online calls technology is becoming more popular among businesses.
"Businesses are using VoIP for incoming/outgoing calls from their office, or using it to flexibly extend the number of outgoing lines," he explained.
Mr Tarbitt noted that VoIP services are always dependent on high quality wide area network links.
"But as broadband is now increasing its coverage and quality, it has made VoIP a viable and reliable technology across much of the UK and Ireland," he stated.
The expert explained that next-generation phone systems are now shipping with VoIP capability - giving businesses a wider range of options.
"It makes a lot of sense for businesses to make use of this capability on their new systems," he claimed.
According to Daisy Group, benefits of VoIP include greater business efficiencies and process enhancement, at a lower total cost of ownership than an on-site telephony solution.
