Small businesses 'buying illegal software'

Thursday 7 February 2013

Many small and medium-sized businesses have admitted to purchasing or downloading illegal software, new research has shown.

A survey by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) found that over half of firms had engaged in such downloading.

As a result of this, 41 per cent said they believed their details were used in identity theft.

Furthermore, 28 per cent said they had their card cloned, 41 per cent said their product had either not arrived or arrived late. Another 33 per cent claimed they had been charged too much.

Meanwhile, 88 per cent of small businesses said that using illegal software would make them more likely to worry about liability; for example when buying a product that has failed health and safety compliance.

Some companies said the downloading of illegal software was an accident while others said they tried to resolve the situation after they found out the product they had invested in was fraudulent.
