Smart devices highly prominent in enterprise IT

The consumerisation trend has "hit IT as an unstoppable force" as more people look to take advantage of mobile solutions, it has been claimed.

According to IT analyst Gartner, an increasing number of companies are making use of smartphones and media tablets on a day-to-day basis.

The firm forecasts 821 million smart devices will be purchased worldwide in 2012 and sales will pass the one billion mark next year.

Smart devices will account for 70 per cent of total devices sold in 2012, the analyst said.

“For most businesses smartphones and tablets will not entirely replace PCs, but the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of tablets are changing the way businesses look at their device strategies and the way consumers embrace devices,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice-president at Gartner.

"In 2016, two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, and 40 per cent of the workforce will be mobile."

Ms Milanesi said the wide range of brands and price points now offered in the market is helping to win over users - both businesses and consumers.

According to Gartner estimates, Windows 8 tablets and ultra-mobiles will account for 39 per cent of smart devices used by businesses in 2016.
