Businesses need to ensure their hosting provider offers a high-speed internet connection, it has been claimed.
Writing for Business 2 Community, Edel Flood said this is vital whatever role the company's website plays in driving revenue.
If the hosting service is slow, employees will waste time and effort trying to keep everything up to date while battling with slow page loads, she said.
Ms Flood claimed there are several standout features firms should look out for as they aim to improve network reliability.
First on the list should be a host that has access to a fibre-optic network, with dedicated internet access, she stated.
This will help reduce latency and eliminate downtime, the expert added.
"After all, the whole point of having an ecommerce platform or online operations in general is so consumers and clients can access products, services and any information they need whenever they require it," she said.
"If they come to your site and find it has crashed or is running slow, their attention will soon wane."
Ms Flood said a smooth online experience is not only attractive to the customer, but they are more likely to recommend the website to their friends, family and other shoppers.
They may do so by word of mouth, on social media or in forums, she added.
