Businesses need to take a number of steps to safeguard their IT systems and data, it has been claimed.

Security firm Interoute said company bosses cannot afford to be complacent at any time - with security breaches highly costly both financially and in terms of companies' reputations.

The company urged businesses to invest in reputable security solutions - rather than just any old product they find over the internet.

"There are reputable anti-virus and anti-spyware offerings that will block hackers if installed across corporate devices," Interoute told Computer Business Review.

But the firm said the most sensible option is to have security built into their networks, reducing the risks of employee-led security breaches.

One way companies may be able to improve their security is moving data to the cloud, the firm said.

This is because cloud computing providers have vastly more resources at their disposal to put the necessary security defences in place.

Educating employees is also crucial, as this can help curb security threats, Interoute added.

"It's important for employees to know the risks that cybercrime poses, which can help them avoid inadvertently opening the company up to breaches," the firm stated.
