The rise of big data solutions provides "significant opportunities" for companies able to integrate the results into their business processes, it has been claimed.
According to IT analyst International Data Corporation (IDC), choosing an appropriate platform will be a "significant decision" for firms looking to boost draw insight from their information.
This will guide their 'big data journey' and determine how much value they derive from business data.
"Big Data solutions are going to be a significant differentiator for the businesses that are able to use them to change their competitive positions," said Craig Stires, research director for big data and analytics at IDC Asia/Pacific.
He said that organisations looking to build and leverage a solution will need to establish the right business case, choose the best platform and know how to break deployment barriers.
"These projects will challenge the current organisation and potentially impact numerous business processes," Mr Stires noted.
"Choosing the right first big data project, and having a sponsor with foresight will be a major factor in [its] success."
Writing for Computer Business Review, Simon Bain, chief technology officer at Simplexo, recently urged businesses to consider the security challenges presented by big data.
"More data means more transactions, conversations, interactions and data now online, and therefore making the incentives to cyber criminals even more appealing," he stated.
