Consumers shopping online rather than on the high street

An increasing number of UK consumers are turning their backs on the high street in favour of interent ecommerce this year, it has been reported.

Research conducted by Casio found that just 39 per cent of people will spend more than half of their shopping time in physical stores this year.

Some 31 per cent of respondents said they would spend less than half of their time in shops, while the remainder said they would not visit the high street at all.

This figure is up by 40 per cent on the same time last year, Casio found.

Of those surveyed, 36 per cent said in-store overcrowding dissuaded them from using traditional shops, while long queues were cited as a problem by 22 per cent.

Guy Boxall, senior product marketing at Casio Business Division, said: “Although the high street is facing a big challenge Christmas, retailers should see this research as a challenge to improve the in-store shopping experience, rather than the nail in the coffin.

"We are social creatures, and the desire to spend time with each other, particularly at Christmas, is never going to go away."

He said retailers need to use this glimmer of hope as an opportunity to attract shoppers back to the store by looking at affordable innovative technologies now accessible to all retailers.

"Whether it’s incorporating mobile devices on the shop floor or setting up a new point-of-sale system, the chance is there to totally transform consumer behaviours and bring them back to the high street in 2013," Mr Boxall added.
