Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) can use search engine optimisation (SEO) to their advantage as they look to increase their online brand presence, it has been claimed.
Writing for Business 2 Community, Ebrar Khan offered a number of tips to companies seeking to promote themselves using the likes of Google, Yahoo and Bing.
Firstly, marketers need to start by conducting keyword research, the SEO consultant said.
"Keyword research is the foundation of SEO - it tells you if there are any searches for the keywords you are planning to target," he noted.
Next, they need to optimise their titles and meta descriptions tags, adding their keywords, Mr Khan stated.
The third step is to start creating fresh and unique content on websites or business blogs, and ensure new material appears regularly.
Technical SEO comes next, Mr Khan noted, with firms required to ensure their website is crawlable and search engine-friendly - something that is an IT specialist's job.
"Check if you are blocking Google from indexing or crawling your most important pages of your site," he urged.
The fifth step is to establish a presence on social media websites, Mr Khan advised.
This can help increase awareness and website traffic, but also provide a platform for potential new sales leads, he told the news provider.
Then, once the firm has constructed quality links and set up a local business page, it can start to reap the benefits of search engine marketing, Mr Khan suggested.
