Cloud productivity suites can offer major benefits to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), it has been claimed.
Writing for ZDNet's Small Business Matters column, Heather Clancy explained that small companies have a number of options available to them in the cloud as they look to maximise employee performance.
These include Microsoft's Office 365 applications suite which offers email, collaboration and messaging capabilities to SMBs, she noted.
In addition, such companies can take advantage of web-based versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Ms Clancy said.
With rival application suites no longer free to the use, she suggested more SMBs may embrace Office 365 in 2013.
When selecting a cloud-based productivity suite, Ms Clancy said it is important for SMBs to consider the variety of features on offer and how they relate to potential users.
Firms should also look at the backgrounds of the companies behind these respective services, the expert added.
SMB IT analyst Techaisle recently predicted that small companies will up their investment in cloud computing services over the course of the next year.
"Revenue will become the focus rather than tight cost control," the firm said.
"The adoption of cloud-based productivity suites among SMBs will accelerate which will begin to balance usage of collaborative and individual Software-as-a-Service applications."
