Microsoft is giving home consumers the chance to take advantage of business-grade email services using Outlook.com, it has been claimed.
Writing for AP, Anick Jesdanun explained that personal email users are being migrated over to the new service from Hotmail, MSN and other Microsoft email platforms.
He noted that Microsoft is adopting the Outlook brand for personal, web-based email services as well as business communications.
"It's part of a broad makeover that includes the company's overhaul of the Windows operating system and the Office software suite," Mr Jesdanun stated.
He told the news provider that millions of email subscribers will be migrated across to the new platform in the coming weeks and months.
Users will see "a lot of improvements" when they switch, the writer claimed - with social media integration one of the benefits.
"With Outlook, you can have the service automatically fill your address book with contact information not just from Google but also from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and even China's Sina service. You can chat with a Facebook friend directly from the Outlook website," Mr Jesdanun added.
"And if you get an email from a Facebook friend, you might see that person's latest Facebook post to the right, as long as Facebook has that email address registered to the social networking account."
