Spamhaus attack highlights importance of security

Thursday 28 March 2013

The scale of the ongoing attack against Spamhaus tells business leaders everything they need to know about online security risks.

Experts believe the anti-spam organisation may have just experienced the biggest distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack in internet history.

Some 300Gpbs of data was thrown at Spamhaus, causing a short-term outage for its online platform. However, the firm was able to recover, quickly getting core services back up and running.

Chief executive Steve Linford described the scale of the DDoS attack as "unprecedented" - indicating that hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics.

"We've been under this cyber-attack for well over a week," he stated.

"But we're up - they haven't been able to knock us down. Our engineers are doing an immense job in keeping it up - this sort of attack would take down pretty much anything else."

Clearly, there are many threats on the internet, and business leaders need to ensure they take the necessary security precautions to safeguard their systems.

Regardless of size or scale, no company can simply assume it is safe - hackers can strike at any time if they see potential value.
