Cost reduction 'a major focus for European SMBs'

Friday 5 April 2013

Cost reduction is one of the major priorities for European small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), a new study has revealed.

Research conducted by International Data Corporation (IDC) found that small company bosses are currently most concerned with reducing expenditure.

By contrast, the majority of employees working within SMBs' IT departments were concerned with data protection and customer care, the firm noted.

"SMBs continue to value flexibility and alignment with the business as key features of IT systems, while keeping an eye on costs," the company stated.

"IT and business objectives are closely intertwined, and although IT managers will continue to play a key role in the IT spending decision-making process, the final purchasing decision increasingly lies with business functions."

As such, IDC said it is "key" for vendors to convey the right message and appeal to business managers by demonstrating a deep understanding of their needs.

Serena Da Rold, program manager for IDC European Industry Solutions, said the 2013 survey highlights an increased focus on cost-reduction initiatives.

These have overtaken sensitive data protection in terms of importance in the SMB segment, she noted.

As such, SMBs may be interested in learning more about how Microsoft solutions can help with controlling business costs.
