80% of businesses to use the cloud by 2014, says Gartner

Thursday 5 September 2013

Four-fifths of business organisations are planning to use cloud services within the next 12 months, it has been reported.

In a study conducted by Gartner, 38 per cent of respondents said they are currently active in the cloud.

But 80 per cent plan to be utilising hosted services in the next 12 months, including 55 per cent of organisations not doing so today.

Gregor Petri, research director at Gartner, noted that cloud services currently constitute only a very small part of the vast enterprise IT market.

As such, he said strategic planners should not make the mistake of taking current cloud use cases to be predictors of future cloud use.

"Cloud computing is set to have a considerable impact on business in the future which is reflected in the survey finding that around 60 per cent of organisations plan increased investment over the next two years to five years," Mr Petri stated.

By comparison, he said just six per cent expect to spend less on cloud services over the same timeframe.
