Strong export figures boost UK business optimism

Manufacturing output rose in March

UK export orders remained strong in the third quarter of 2013, suggesting that the economic recovery continued to gather pace.

According to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and DHL quarterly report - which took into consideration the views of 2,200 businesses - orders were close to the six-year high seen in Q2 2013.

Some 69 per cent of exporters now expect their turnover to improve during Q4 2013 – the highest number since 2007.

And almost a third said they expect to increase staff over the next quarter, up from 31 per cent in Q2 2013.

John Longworth, director general of the BCC, said exporters are "more optimistic than ever" about their prospects, with confidence higher than it has been since before the economic crisis.

"Exports have remained strong, and even more exporting firms are looking to take on new staff," he stated.

"The companies I visit across the UK are inspiring and dedicated, and these results are living proof that it will be businesses that drive our recovery forward."
