Need mapping options?
Just need maps and directions? Use Bing Maps
Need data visualisation and analysis? Power Map for Excel allows you to quickly transform public or corporate data into dynamic and breathtaking 3D map visualisations and then easily share as cinematic tours that tell captivating narratives of your data. And you can do all of this within the familiar environment of Excel.
Are you a developer? Check out Bing Maps API and SDK's including AJAX Control Version 7, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) Control for desktop, REST Services, Spatial Data Services and other options.
Power BI for Excel and SharePoint
The Power BI Suite includes two powerful mapping analysis and visualisation modules, Power Pivot and Power Map for Excel. They each use Bing Maps as the base map. The Power Pivot and Power Map modules in Power BI together offer even more advanced mapping analysis and visualisation capability than was present in Microsoft MapPoint. Examples:
Power Pivot allows you to create interactive reports and dashboards within Excel and also publish Excel Web apps using SharePoint.
Power Map for Excel allows you to construct a set of map slides or views, build transitions and record films to allow you to tell a story with your data.

Bing Maps APIs
The Bing Maps platform provides multiple API options for developing an application, including an AJAX control, a Windows Store apps control, a WPF control, REST Services and Spatial Data Services. Bing Maps APIs can be integrated with desktop applications and serve as a replacement for Microsoft MapPoint. For additional details about the APIs, go to Choose Your Bing Maps API and MSDN.
Bing Maps offers a variety of licensing options to align with application and business needs, including a free tier with some restrictions. For step-by-step guidance on licensing, go to the Bing Maps Licensing Options Web page.
Other Bing Maps Options
Without actually programming with the Bing Maps APIs or using the Bing Maps consumer website (bing.com/maps), there are a couple of ways to construct URLs that open interactive Bing Maps in a customised view, or that retrieve static map images. These could be used, for instance, for Excel formulas or in basic macros or scripts.
The first method does not require a Bing Maps Key and creates a link that opens an interactive map by specifying parameters that can be customized. For more information, see
Create a Custom Map URL.
The second method requires a Bing Maps Key and it returns a link to a static map image that can be embedded in a web page or other application. For information about how to get a Bing Maps key, go to create a Bing Maps Key.
For more information about creating a static map, see Get A Static Map.
Bing Maps Web Site and Maps App
The consumer-facing Bing Maps website and the Maps app, available in the Windows Store, allow for basic and advanced mapping operations, such as finding locations worldwide and determining driving, transit and walking directions between locations. A variety of map styles and map imagery views are available, including aerial, road, bird's eye and Streetside views.
Bing Maps also includes the My Places editor, which allows you to input, annotate and share up to 200 locations and map drawing objects with friends and colleagues.
Other Microsoft Mapping Technologies
Bing Maps can be integrated with other Microsoft software such as Windows Azure, SQL Server, SharePoint, Office, Dynamics CRM and AX to deploy innovative enterprise solutions. For more information about integration, go to Developer Resources and select “Integration with Dynamics, SharePoint and SQL Server†on the right sidebar.
