In addition to sending a place and sharing a link to the map, two other features are also supported using SMS: positioning and online search. These features are currently available only in India.

The chief intention of having this feature is to extend Nokia Maps for S40 features like positioning and online search to users who do not have GPRS enabled on their phones.  SMS supported features are:

  • Positioning: The user can request his current position using SMS. In this mode, when the user selects the My Position icon, a single SMS is sent to a pre-determined number. In response, the Nokia Maps for S40 application receives an SMS response with position detail.
On receiving the SMS, the Nokia Maps for S40 application opens up the map view screen to show the user the map with his position marked on it.
  • Online POI search: After seeing the offline results, if the user does not find the desired POI, he can opt to search online for the latest results.  A single SMS is sent to a pre-determined number. In response, the Nokia Maps for S40 application receives up to 3 SMSs with details of POIs matching the search term, with up to 10 results (depends on length of POI name, category info and other details). These results contain details for the POIs like name, geocode, category and contact numbers.
Note: Preloaded Nokia Maps for S40 are required to support the above features. No map data can be downloaded via SMS. Note 2: This feature works only for onebox search. You cannot use online search over SMS to search for category of places. In addition, you can also share feedback and provide statistical data using SMS. See the section titled PRIVACY AND FEEDBACK for more details.
