Managing Your Software Inventory

Microsoft Asset Inventory Service (AIS) is a web-based service that delivers a comprehensive view of the software installed on desktops throughout your organization, helping you manage and control your software inventory.

AIS helps:

  • Reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) of desktops

  • Improve license compliance through advanced software inventory scanning

A core component of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), AIS consists of two parts:

  • A web-based service for viewing inventories of software installed on desktops within an organization

  • Client software that communicates with the service and supplies it with the inventory information

Key Benefits

  • Ensure compliance to reduce risk. By getting the most complete view of the software installed on enterprise PCs, you can determine which licenses have been deployed and whether all software is compliant with license agreements, key industry standards, and corporate policies.

  • Implement easily, cost-effectively, and more securely. AIS can be set up in just a few hours. Because it is offered as a service, inventory data is hosted by Microsoft, so there are no servers for you to maintain.

  • Improve forecasting and budgeting. Easy access to a detailed inventory of your organization’s current desktop software environment helps you manage software assets and forecast future needs. AIS also analyzes how Microsoft Volume License agreements are deployed to help you more easily manage true-ups, renewals, and license reallocation.

Capabilities

Microsoft Asset Inventory Service (AIS) is well suited to enterprise organizations. The AIS software agent that is installed on each client machine collects the client inventory data to produce detailed inventory reports in the online user interface.

  • Comprehensive inventory reports. The inventory data is reconciled against the AIS application knowledge base—which contains hundreds of thousands of software titles representing the vast majority of commercially available software—to produce meaningful application information. This information can be transformed into actionable, browser-based reports that you can securely view online, anytime. You can see reports from an organization-wide perspective as well as those for individual workstations/users.

  • Software license management. You can ensure that licenses you have purchased are being used and that all software within your business is compliant with your license agreements. AIS helps you review what you have deployed from your Volume License agreements and manage true-ups, renewals, and license reallocation.
