Microsoft has a collection of asset inventory and management tools that help organizations of all sizes with their SAM efforts. Some tools are licensed for on-premise use through programs like Open, Select, and Enterprise Agreements, while others are hosted services available through subscription.

Microsoft System Center Tools

  • Microsoft System Center Service Manager provides built-in processes based on industry best practices for incident and problem resolution, change control, and asset life-cycle management. By coordinating information flow throughout the System Center suite, Service Manager helps your IT department adapt to new business requirements, reduce costs, and lower time to resolution.

  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager helps you control your organization’s IT infrastructure by providing visibility into your existing hardware and software assets, who is using them, and where they are. Configuration Manager provides rich reports that help IT administrators optimize software and hardware usage.

  • Microsoft System Center Essentials is a new management solution specifically designed for midsized businesses. With Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 technology built in, System Center Essentials integrates physical and virtual server management and monitoring into a unified solution with a single console.

Available as a free download, this solution accelerator provides usage information for network computers, including servers in the Core CAL Suite.

Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer (MSIA)

The Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer (MSIA) helps customers get started with SAM. This free tool was created for networks with 250 or fewer computers, and is available for download in 31 languages.  MSIA provides details on all installed Microsoft products, including the type and the number of licenses.
