Overview

Before you begin: Be sure to plug in and turn on any USB devices or other devices, such as printers, external hard disks, and scanners, that you regularly use with the PC you're checking.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor scans your PC for potential compatibility issues and lets you know about your Windows 7 upgrade options. Within minutes, you'll get a report that tells you if your PC meets the system requirements, if any known compatibility issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs are found, and gives guidance on what to do to before installing Windows 7 on your PC.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2

  • .NET Framework 2.0 or higher if running Windows XP

Instructions

  1. Download and run Windows7UpgradeAdvisorSetup.exe to install Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
    • If your PC is running Windows XP, setup will make sure .NET Framework 2.0 is installed. If it's not found, setup will help you install it.
  2. Plug in and turn on any USB devices or other devices, such as printers, external hard disks, and scanners, that you regularly use with the PC you're checking
  3. Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from your start menu or desktop

Additional information

If you're running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor inside Virtual PC or Remote Desktop, Windows Aero capability might not be detected properly.

What happens if I don't install the Microsoft Download Manager?

Generally, a download manager enables downloading large files or multiples files in one session.Many Web browsers,such as Internet Explorer 9, include a download manager and there are many stand-alone download managers available, including the Microsoft Download Manager.

However, if you do not have a download manager installed,and still want to download the file(s) you've chosen, please note:

  • You may not be able to download multiple files at the same time.In this case, you will have to download the files individually from the "Thank you for downloading" page.
  • File larger than 1 GB may take much longer to download and they might not download correctly.
  • You might not be able to pause the active downloads or resume downloads that have failed.
  • Files may be more difficult to download or take longer to download
