Changes to Licenses and SKUs

The SQL Server 2012 release will simplify customer options with three main editions that are closely aligned with how customers use SQL Server across workloads. SQL Server 2012 will also deliver licensing which enables customers to more easily take advantage of the benefits of public and private cloud through virtualization and license mobility.

Together, these changes give organizations the following advantages
  • Simplicity: SQL Server 2012 will offer two licensing options – one that is based on computing power, and one that is based on users or devices.
  • Flexibility: Get cloud-optimized licensing with the ability to license a single Virtual Machine (VM) or license a server for maximum virtualization as well as the flexibility to move your VMs from server to server, or to hosting providers or the cloud.
  • Industry-leading TCO: SQL Server 2012 continues to provide outstanding value at any scale among all major vendors.

The table above shows the key features and new licensing options per edition of SQL Server 2012. Note that Server+CAL licensing will be retired for Enterprise editions from 30 June 2012. New server licenses for Enterprise Edition will be available for purchase only until 30 June 2012. Additional Enterprise Edition Server+CAL licenses will not be sold thereafter. In addition, SQL Server 2012 introduces Business Intelligence edition, which will be offered exclusively via server+CAL licensing. SQL Server 2012 Standard edition will continue to be available via core-based and server+CAL licensing; while Data Center, Workgroup, and Small Business Server editions of SQL Server will be retired.
