As a result of the January 2001 settlement of a dispute over Microsoft’s distribution of its Java implementation, Microsoft has been phasing out the Microsoft Virtual Machine for Java (MSJVM) in its products.

This guide helps you identify MSJVM dependencies in an existing application and outlines tested procedures for migrating to alternative environments, including both Microsoft-supported and non-Microsoft options.

The guide provides step-by-step instructions for evaluating, planning, and transitioning existing applications, using a number of strategies to achieve independence from MSJVM. It describes tools such as the Microsoft Visual J#® .NET and the Microsoft Java Language Conversion Assistant to assist with evaluating and converting existing code.

        Topics include:
        • Migrate to .NET, J# vs. Visual C#
        • Migrate to .NET Using Visual J# and J# Browser Controls
        • Migrate to .NET Using the Java Language Conversion Assistant
        • DHTML and Client-side Scripting
        • ECMAScript and JScript
        • Flash
        • Switch to Another JRE
