Gaming desktop machines are shipping with 4 to 8 GB of RAM standard, and even gaming laptops come with 4 GB of RAM, but your game can’t even utilize 2 GB. The days of 64-bit personal computing, and multi-terabyte memory addressing have arrived, but just like multicore there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Games struggling to fit into the 31-bit memory limits can gain immense breathing room by moving to 64-bit native executables for tools, internal development, and for end-users. This talk covers the current virtual memory challenges in games, practical advice for porting to 64-bit, ways to address potential roadblocks, tips for optimization, ways to exploit x64 technology, and case studies from games that have already made the jump.
