Overview

Office XP Update: Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides the latest updates to Microsoft Office XP. Office XP SP2 contains significant security enhancements, as well as stability and performance improvements. Some of the fixes included with SP2 have been previously released as separate updates. This service pack combines them into one update.


Microsoft recommends that users install the Office XP SP2 update using the Office Product Updates site. This site will detect your Office installation, prompt you to install exactly what you need to be fully updated, and can minimize the time required to download this update.


Office XP SP2 addresses the issues described in the following Microsoft Security Bulletins:

• Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-021: E-mail Editor Flaw Could Lead to Script Execution on Reply or Forward (Q321804).
• Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-031: Cumulative Patches for Excel and Word for Windows (Q324458).
• Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-044: Unsafe Functions in Office Web Components (Q328130).

This service pack also includes all updates released since Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP1):

• Office XP Speller Update: April 25, 2002
• Word 2002 Update: April 25, 2002
• Excel 2002 Update: June 19, 2002
• Office XP Clip Organizer Update: June 19, 2002
• Word 2002 Update: June 19, 2002

Office XP SP2 will install successfully even if one or more of the publicly available updates listed above has already been installed on your computer.


Office XP SP2 also includes stability improvements developed as a result of user input from the Error Reporting Tool in Office XP and from Microsoft Product Support feedback.


Important Any public updates released after Office XP SP2 will require the installation of SP2.

If you are running Microsoft Windows® 2000, installing Office XP SP2 may require a reboot of your machine. This reboot may be prevented by upgrading to Windows Installer 2.0.


To ensure the integrity of your Microsoft Office installation, the Windows Installer may require access to your installation media or network installation location before applying any product updates. This is a technical requirement of Windows Installer-based software patching and is not intended to be an anti-piracy measure. Important If you are using Office XP Multilingual Pack

For complete Office XP SP-2 functionality if you are using an Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack, you will need to install both of the following:

• Office XP Update: Service Pack 2 (SP-2)
• Office XP Update: Service Pack 2 (SP-2) for Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack

Important: Prior to installing Office XP SP2, you must install Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).
