ADO.NET Data Services for Silverlight 3 Update CTP3

This release includes an updated version of the ADO.NET Data Services client library that shipped with Silverlight 3. This updated library enables Silverlight developers to make full use of the features exposed by data services created using the ADO.NET Data Services Update for .NET 3.5 SP1 release.

The features and improvements supported by the client library in this release are:
        • A new DataServiceCollection class has been added that supports rich two-way data binding. The new collection implements automatic change tracking on client side objects created using the ADO.NET Data Services client library. For more information, see How to: Bind Data Service Data to Controls (ADO.NET Data Services/Silverlight).
        • Feed customization, provides a rich and flexible way to shape and modify the structure of ATOM feeds produced by an ADO.NET Data Service. Modifying the structure of the ATOM feed produced by the ADO.NET Data Services makes it possible for third-party clients that can consume an ATOM feed in a custom format to consume feeds from an ADO.NET Data Service. The client library in this update natively supports working with feeds customized in this way. For more information, see Atom Feed Customization (ADO.NET Data Services).
        • Support has also been added to the ADO.NET Data Services client library to provide the ability to upload and download binary objects (such as: images, videos, documents, etc.) from an application created using the library. For more information, see Working with Binary Data (ADO.NET Data Services).
        • Server-driven paging allows a service author to limit the size of the result set returned by a query; this gives the service author a new level of control over the network bandwidth and computation time required to process any request. For more information, see Loading Deferred Content (ADO.NET Data Services).
        • A new select query option allows the result of a query to be projected into an arbitrary type; projecting gives the client the ability to request a specific set of properties of an entity. Reducing the number of properties requested in a query reduces processing time and network bandwidth for the request. For more information, see Query Projections (ADO.NET Data Services).
        • The option to request a count of the number of entities in a set and the option to include the total count of the number of entities in the set when a query returns a partial result. For more information, see Querying the Data Service (ADO.NET Data Services).
    • Supported Operating System

Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3

        Other requirements:
        • Microsoft Silverlight® 3 SDK and Microsoft Silverlight 3 Runtime
        • Microsoft Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1
        • Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
        • Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008 SP1 or Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition
      • What you should know before installing ADO.NET Data Services for Silverlight 3 Update CTP3:
        • The ADO.NET Data Services for Silverlight 3 Update CTP3 is a go-live version of ADO.NET Data Services. While this release is a high-quality stable release, it is not considered a finished product. It is recommend that you move to Silverlight 4 when it becomes available.
        • If you are intending to use the ADO.NET Data Services client library for Microsoft Silverlight 3 included in this CTP, install the Microsoft Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 before installing this CTP.
        • This release is separate from the Project Codename “Astoria Offline”, Alpha Preview release that was made available online on March 03, 2009. Installing this CTP release on the same system as the offline preview is not supported and it is strongly recommended that you do not install the two releases on the same system.
        • The setup requires that Visual Studio is closed before running the setup. If Visual Studio is running, the setup will show a warning message indicating that a file is locked but the setup will not fail. If this occurs, close Visual Studio, re-run the setup, and choose the repair option in the setup to complete the install.
        • Since this is an out of band release of ADO.NET Data Services for Silverlight 3, we recommend that you avoid replacing the assembly installed with the Silverlight 3 SDK.
        • Also, ensure that you are referencing this updated assembly rather than an older one.
