Overview
The
Outlook 98 Java Permissions Security Update protects you from a vulnerability in
Microsoft Outlook® 98 that allows HTML e-mail messages to launch an instance of
your Internet browser with security settings at a decreased level. Because
malicious Java code could potentially execute from HTML e-mail, this update will
set "Java permissions" for the Microsoft Virtual Machine to "Disable Java" for
the Restricted Sites zone. This will not impact the way your computer interacts
with Java in normal Web browsing.
Note Before you install the Java Permissions Security
Update, you must install the Outlook 98 E-mail
Security Update.
Note To install this update, you must have
administrator-level privileges on the machine you are using. If you are not an
administrator, you can manually update the security settings in your browser by
using the procedure below. If you do not have the Microsoft VM heading then the
manual procedure and update do not need to be applied to your computer.
Change security settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- On the Security tab, click Restricted sites, and then click Custom Level....
- Scroll down to the Microsoft VM heading, and select Disable
Java under the Java permissions heading.
- Click OK to change the custom setting, and click OK again to
apply your new security setting and exit the Internet Options dialog
box.
