      This procedure provides the steps and downloads required to generate a text file from an Event Trace Log (ETL) file, enabling the user to read trace data for Data Protection Manager (DPM).
  • Supported Operating System

    Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32-Bit x86), Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition, Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86), Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition , Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 x64 Edition, Windows Server 2008

    • To view .etl files after collecting traces for Data Protection Manager:
      1. Download DlsTrace.zip and save it to your local computer.
      2. Extract DlsTrace.zip contents with an unzip utility. Save DlsTrace.mof and Readme.doc. Make note of the directory in which you saved these files.
      3. Download LogParser 2.2 from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=132567.
      4. Run LogParser.msi. LogParser will be installed in the following locations:
        • x86 file systems. %ProgramFiles%\Log Parser 2.2
        • x64 file systems. %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Log Parser 2.2
      5. On a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 computer, open an elevated command prompt. To open an elevated command prompt, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. On a Windows Server 2003 computer, open a regular command prompt.
      6. From the location where you saved the DlsTrace.mof file, run mofcomp DlsTrace.mof.
      7. On a successful execution, the output will appear as follows:

        Copyright (c) Microsoft Corp. 1997-2006. All rights reserved.
        Parsing MOF file: DlsTrace.mof
        MOF file has been successfully parsed
        Storing data in the repository...
        Done!
      8. From the Log Parser installation folder, run the following commands:

        set ETL_FILE=[etl filename with complete path]

        set TXT_FILE=[Text filename with complete path]

        LogParser "SELECT EventNumber,Timestamp,ProcessID AS PID,ThreadID AS TID,Message INTO %TXT_FILE% FROM %ETL_FILE%" -i:etw -fmode:full -o:nat -rtp:-1 -stats:off
      9. This creates the text file at the specified path with the given file name.
