PLEASE NTOE: The material on this page is out of date. For the latest information on SQL Server Modeling-related technologies, i.e. “M”, “Quadrant”, SQL Server Modeling Services and the Repository, read this update.

SQL Server Modeling CTP Nov 2009 Release 3 is a re-release of the November 2009 CTP to support the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 final releases. You will be required to have the final .NET Framework 4 installed to setup the CTP and Visual Studio 2010 is required for M Tools integration. See the System Requirements section below for more information.

The components of the SQL Server Modeling CTP are:
        • “M” is a highly productive, developer friendly, textual language for defining schemas, queries, values, functions and DSLs for SQL Server databases
        • “Quadrant” is a customizable tool for interacting with large datasets stored in SQL Server databases
        • SQL Server Modeling Services (formerly the “Oslo” Repository) is a SQL Server role for the secure sharing of models between applications and systems

For more details on this download, see the release notes. Details on all the CTP technologies can be found on the MSDN Data Developer Center.
    • Supported Operating System

Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP

          • x86
          • x64 (Windows-on-Windows)
          Supported Operating Systems
          • Windows XP SP3
          • Windows Vista SP1, SP2
          • Windows Server 2003 R2 or SP2
          • Windows Server 2008 SP2
          • Windows Server 2008 R2
          • Windows 7
        • Windows Installer 4.5
          • To run setup, Windows Installer 4.5 is required.
          • If Windows Installer is not installed, a system restart will be requested after its installation completes.
        • .NET Framework 4
          • .NET Framework 4 is required for SQL Server Modeling CTP Setup to work properly. Setup will request installation of the .NET Framework if a suitable version is not found.
        • SQL Server 2008 SP1 Express (or higher edition)
        • Visual Studio 2010 (any edition)
          • Visual Studio is not required for SQL Server Modeling CTP Release 3; but for full functionality with Visual Studio and M Tools integration, Visual Studio 2010, Visual C# and Visual Web Developer are required.
      • Uninstalling previous versions of the CTP
We HIGHLY recommend you uninstall the previous CTP before moving to Visual Studio 2010 or .NET Framework 4.
To install the new CTP, you need to uninstall any previous CTP by doing the following:
        1. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall
          • Microsoft SQL Server Modeling CTP
        2. Drop your existing Repository database
If you have already installed Visual Studio 2010 or .NET Framework 4, you will need to do the following to remove the previous SQL Server Modeling CTPs:
Run the following commands, which forces Windows Installer to remove any remaining pieces of the original product installation:
        • M Tools:
          Msiexec /x {B7EE8AF2-3DCC-4AFE-8BD2-5A6CE9E85B3A}
        • Quadrant:
          Msiexec /x {61F3728B-1A7D-4dd8-88A5-001CBB9D2CFA}
        • Domains:
          Msiexec /x {11DA75C8-10AB-4288-A1BB-B3C2593524A7}
Installing Microsoft SQL Server Modeling CTP Release 3
        Before Installing
        Remote Desktop Users
The UI for SQL Server Modeling setup may stop responding over remote desktop sessions due to an issue with WPF layered/transparent windows in the .NET Framework 4. To work around the problem, you should:
        1. Run setup locally.
        2. Run setup.exe from a command line with the /q switch to run with no UI. Run setup.exe /? for more options.
        SQL Permission Requirements
        • Quadrant requires SQL SysAdmin server role privileges
        • Quadrant will display an error and exit if the current user does not have SysAdmin server role privileges under the running instance of Microsoft SQL Server.
        • Generally, the user that installed the SQL Server instance will be included in the SQL SysAdmin server role.
Workaround: Add the current user to the SQL SysAdmin server role and restart Quadrant.

Run SQLServerModelingCTPNov09-Release3.exe from an unprotected folder
If you save and run the SQLServerModelingCTPNov09-Release3.exe file from a system protected folder (ex %ProgramFiles%, %SysRoot%, or others) you will receive an "Unspecified error" Unloading the Box error message. The exe must be placed in an unprotected folder so that it can decompress the SQL Server Modeling CTP files and run setup.exe.

        Setup.exe requires elevated privileges
Setup.exe must run with Administrator privileges. Refer to the installation log (located at %temp%\OsloSetup.log) for more information.

        Default Installation – "Install Now"
"Install Now" installs all SQL Server Modeling CTP components: Modeling Services, Quadrant, and M Tools. By default, installation occurs into %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Oslo (on a 64–bit machine, this will be in %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Oslo).
        1. Click "Install Now" and click Continue on the Usage Reporting page. Participation is mandatory only for this pre-release version.
        2. Once installation completes, click Close.
        Custom Installation – "Customize"
        1. Click "Customize" and click Continue on the Usage Reporting page. Participation is mandatory only for this pre-release version.
        2. Choose the location where you want Microsoft SQL Server Modeling CTP components installed (default is %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Oslo).
        3. Select the following programs to install:
          • Modeling Services
          • M Tools
          • Quadrant
        4. Click Continue.
        5. Setup will prompt for SQL Server Modeling Services settings if you opted to install any services:
          • Check the box if you want a database created.
          • Enter the database name (default is "Repository") and target server (default is ".").
          • Click Browse to select other SQL Server instances locally or on the network.
        6. Click Continue, and then Close.

For more install options, uninstall and troubleshooting setup information, see the Release Notes and the Readme.htm located in the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Oslo\1.0\ directory.
Note that while the formerly code-name “Oslo” technologies are now released under the name SQL Server Modeling, you’ll find that many components of this CTP still bear the “Oslo” name, such as the installation folder “Microsoft Oslo”. All the components still internally refer to “Oslo”. These references will be removed in a future CTP, so developers are encouraged to refer to SQL Server Modeling instead of “Oslo”.
