This document provides a configuration guide for creating a hybrid cluster with Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 that allows running high-performance computing (HPC) applications with Windows Azure. The purpose of this document is to provide a hands-on guide to using Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 with SP2 with Windows Azure. We demonstrate how to configure and deploy two types of Windows Azure compute nodes as part of an HPC cluster:
      • Windows Azure compute instance that runs as a worker role
      • Windows Azure compute instance that runs as a VM role

This document also includes a brief explanation about how to add on-premises compute nodes.

Some of the technical choices that are used in this document are not recommended in a production environment, and they are used for demonstration purposes only. The examples in this document refer to Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 with SP2.
