      Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio extend Visual Studio 2010 SP1/ Visual Studio 2012 to enable the creation, configuration, building, debugging, running, packaging and deployment of scalable web applications and services on Windows Azure.

      Windows Azure™ is a cloud services operating system that serves as the development, service hosting and service management environment for the Windows Azure platform. Windows Azure provides developers with on-demand compute and storage services to host, scale, and manage web applications on the internet through Microsoft® datacenters.

      Windows Azure is a flexible platform that supports multiple languages and integrates with your existing on-premises environment. To build applications and services on Windows Azure, developers can use their existing Microsoft Visual Studio® expertise. In addition, Windows Azure supports popular standards, protocols and languages including SOAP, REST, XML, Java, PHP, Ruby, Node and Python.

      Note: Windows 7 Home Basic is not supported.
      • Required Software:
        • Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Professional/Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 OR Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express SP1/Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2012 (only when installing the Windows Azure Tools). Note - This page is intended for VS 2010 SP1 and VS 2012. The files on this page will not work with any pre-release versions of VS 2012.
        • IIS7 with ASP.NET and WCF HTTP Activation, Static Content, IIS Management Console and HTTP Redirection.
        • IIS URL Rewrite Module 2.0
        • ASP.NET MVC 3 Tools Update
        • Windows PowerShell
        • Hotfix: Enable Windows Azure IntelliTrace on 32-Bit OS (not required for x64 OS).
        • .NET Framework 3.5 (only for Windows Server 2008 and Windows 8)
  • Install Instructions

      To install the Windows Azure SDK for .NET manually, follow these steps:
      1. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (not required for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2)
      2. Install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Professional or Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 OR Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express SP1 OR Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2012.
      3. Install IIS URL Rewrite Module 2.0.
      4. Install IIS Express for Azure (for Visual Studio 2010 SP1) x86 x64.To use IISExpress with HTTPS, follow step 16-3.
      5. Install LocalDB on Visual Studio 2010 SP1 SP1 x86 x64
      6. You will also need the SQL2012 LocalDB prereq of .Net FX update 4.0.2 or higher from here
      7. Install the Windows Azure Authoring Tools - June 2012 - WindowsAzureAuthoringTools-x86.msi or WindowsAzureAuthoringTools-x64.msi
      8. Install the Windows Azure Emulator - June 2012 - WindowsAzureEmulator-x86.exe or WindowsAzureEmulator-x64.exe
      9. Install the ASP.NET MVC 3 Tools Update
      10. Install the Windows Azure Client Libraries for .NET 1.7 - June 2012 - WindowsAzureLibsForNet-x86.msi or WindowsAzureLibsForNet-x64.msi
      11. Install the Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 SP1 - June 2012 SP1 - WindowsAzureTools.VS.100.exe or Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 - June 2012 SP1 - WindowsAzureTools.VS.110
      12. Install the Web Publish Tools from here if you are using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 SP1.
      13. Install the Hotfix: Enable Windows Azure IntelliTrace on 32-Bit OS (not required for x64 OS).
      14. Install the WebDeployment Tools 2.1 and up
      15. Install the Hotfix: Correct WCF metadata when hosting behind a load balancer (.NET 3.5 Roles)
      16. OPTIONAL for full IIS Enable IIS7 with ASP.NET and WCF HTTP Activation, Static Content, IIS Management Console, HTTP Redirection and optionally CGI, ISAPI Extensions, ISAPI Filters, Directory Browsing, HTTP Errors, Logging Tools, Request Monitor and Tracing, Request Filtering.
        • Windows 7
          1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.
          2. Choose Turn Windows Features On or Off.
          3. Under Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, select Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation. If you follow this step, in order to debug .NET Framework 4.0 projects you must follow the instructions provided at System.TypeLoadException for System.ServiceModel.Activation.HttpModule in ASP.NET 4.
          4. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Application Development Features, then select .NET Extensibility, ASP.NET, ISAPI Extensions and ISAPI Filters.
          5. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Common HTTP Features, then select Directory Browsing, HTTP Errors, HTTP Redirection, Static Content.
          6. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Health and Diagnostics, then select Logging Tools, Request Monitor and Tracing.
          7. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Security, then select Request Filtering.
          8. Under Internet Information Services, expand Web Management Tools, then select IIS Management Console.
          9. Install the selected features.
        • Windows Server 2008
          1. From the Start menu, choose Programs | Administrative Tools | Server Manager.
          2. In Server Manager, under Features Summary, choose Add Features.
          3. In the Add Features dialog, under .NET Framework 3.0 Features, select the .NET Framework 3.0. Under WCF Activation, select HTTP Activation. Choose the Next button to install. If you follow this step, in order to debug .NET Framework 4.0 projects you must follow the instructions provided at System.TypeLoadException for System.ServiceModel.Activation.HttpModule in ASP.NET 4.
          4. In Server Manager, under Roles Summary, verify that Web Server (IIS) appears in the list of available roles. If it does not, choose Add Roles to install Internet Information Services.
          5. In Server Manager, under Roles Summary, choose Web Server (IIS).
          6. In the Web Server (IIS) management window, choose Add Role Services.
          7. In the Add Role Services dialog, expand Web Server, then Common HTTP Features, then select Directory Browsing, HTTP Errors, HTTP Redirection, Static Content.
          8. In the Add Role Services dialog, expand Web Server, then Application Development Features, then select .NET Extensibility, ASP.NET, ISAPI Extensions and ISAPI Filters.
          9. In the Add Role Services dialog, expand Web Server, then Health and Diagnostics, then select Logging Tools, Request Monitor and Tracing.
          10. In the Add Role Services dialog, expand Web Server, then Security, then select Request Filtering.
          11. Under Internet Information Services, expand Web Management Tools, then select IIS Management Console.
        • Windows 8
          1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.
          2. Choose Turn Windows Features On or Off.
          3. Under Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, select Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation
          4. Under .NET Framework 4.5 Advanced Services, select Asp.Net 4.5 and WCF Services -> HTTP Activation & TCP Port Sharing
          5. Under Internet Information Services, select Web Management Tools -> IIS Management Console.
          6. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Application Development Features, then select .NET Extensibility 3.5, .Net Extensibility 4.5, Asp.Net 3.5, Asp.Net 4.5, ISAPI Extensions, ISAPI Filters.
          7. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Common HTTP Features, then select Default Document, Directory Browsing, HTTP Errors, HTTP Redirection, Static Content
          8. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Health and Diagnostics, then select Logging Tools, Request Monitor, Tracing.
          9. Under Internet Information Services, expand World Wide Web Services, then Security, then select Request Filtering.
        • Windows Server 2012
          1. From the Start menu, choose Programs | Administrative Tools | Server Manager.
          2. In Server Manager, open "Add Roles and Features" wizard and select the Web Server (IIS) Role in Server Roles.
          3. Under IIS Server Role Features, select .Net Framework 3.5 Features - HTTP Features
          4. Under Web Server Role (IIS) - Role Services, expand Web Server -> Common HTTP Features and select Default Document, Directory Browsing, HTTP Errors and Static Content
          5. Under Web Server Role (IIS) - Role Services, expand Web Server -> Health and Diagnostics and select HTTP Logging, Logging Tools, Request Monitor and Tracing
          6. Under Web Server Role (IIS) - Role Services, expand Web Server -> Security and select Request Filtering
          7. Under Web Server Role (IIS) - Role Services, expand Web Server -> Application Development and select .NET Extensibility 3.5, .NET Extensibility 4.5, Asp.Net 3.5, Asp.Net 4.5, ISAPI Extensions, ISAPI Filters
          8. Under Internet Information Services, expand Web Management Tools, then select IIS Management Console.
