      SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) is the next version of MSDE 2000. It is a free, easy-to-use, lightweight version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. To obtain additional information about SQL Server Express, click here.

      SQL Server 2005 Express Edition - Community Technology Preview February 2005 is unsupported pre-release software.

      Note: Before you install SQL Server Express, follow the instructions below.

    Supported Operating System

    Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Professional Edition , Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional Edition

      • Intel Pentium III or compatible 550-megahertz (MHz) or higher processor (1 gigahertz or more recommended)

      • 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM (512 MB or more recommended)

      • 405 MB of available hard disk space

      • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

    Install Instructions
      To download and install SQL Server 2005 Express, perform the following steps in the exact order as presented.

      Note: You must have administrative rights on the computer to install SQL Server 2005 Express.

      • Step 1: Use Add/Remove Programs to remove any earlier version of SQL Server 2005 components (prior to build 9.00.1090).
        • Remove the following components (if any or all exist) in the same order as listed here:
        • Microsoft SQL Server "Yukon" Beta 1
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Data Transformation Services Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Notification Services Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Beta 2
        • Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files
        • Microsoft SQL Native Client
        Note1: If you are uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 December 2004 CTP release, the component names in Add or Remove Programs will say "Beta 3" instead of "Beta 2."
        Note2: You do not have to remove previous versions of SQL Server, such as: SQL Server 2000, SQL Server version 7.0, or earlier.

      • Step 2: Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Microsoft .NET Framework versions 1.2 or 2.0, if installed.


        • Note: You do not have to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework Versions 1.0 and 1.1.

      • Step 3: Download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 available here.


      • Step 4: Install SQL Server 2005 Express by clicking the Download button on the upper right corner of this page. SQLExpr.exe is a self-extracting installation package of SQL Server 2005 Express. Save the SQLExpr.exe file to your computer.

        Note: If you click Open (instead of Save), SQLExpr.exe will start Setup over the network. This method is not recommended on slow network or dial-up connections.


      • Step 5: Double-click the downloaded SQLExpr.exe file and examine the End User License Agreement information. If you accept the terms, select I accept the licensing terms and conditions, and then click Next to continue the installation.
