Windows PowerShell is a new task-based command line shell and intuitive scripting language for system administration that provides comprehensive control and automation for Windows administrators. Windows PowerShell makes administrators more productive by improving the manageability of the Windows operating system and applications that run on Windows. Exchange Server 2007 and System Center Operations Manager 2007 (Microsoft Operations Manager “V3”) will be built upon Windows PowerShell.

The key features of Windows PowerShell include:

        • One hundred and twenty nine standard utilities (called "cmdlets") for completing common system administration tasks such as working with the registry, services, processes, Windows Management Instrumentation, event logs, etc..

        • Intuitive, task-based scripting language and support for existing scripts and command line tools..

        • Designed for consistency so all tools and system data stores follow a common syntax, common naming conventions and information can be easily shared/piped between tools.

        • Simplified command-based navigation of the operating system (including drives, startup files, and registry).

        • Powerful object manipulation capabilities (objects can be directly manipulated or pipelined to other tools or databases).

        • Designed for extensibility so that independent software vendors and enterprise developers can easily build custom tools and utilities to administer their software.

    • System Requirements
      Supported Operating System

Windows Server 2003 Itanium-based editions, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 for Itanium-based Systems, Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition (Itanium) , Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition (Itanium) 2003

Requires the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (see Related Resources below).
        1. Download the .zip file.

        2. Extract the files.

        3. Run the extracted file PowerShell_Setup_ia64.msi.

IMPORTANT: If you have installed a previous beta version of the Windows "Monad" Shell on an earlier version of the .NET Framework, you must uninstall "Monad" (via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel) before uninstalling the .NET Framework. If you uninstall the .NET Framework first, the uninstall of Monad will fail.

      • If you installed the original Windows PowerShell RC1 between April 25th and May 3rd, you should uninstall the original Windows PowerShell RC1 version and install the re-release of Windows PowerShell RC1 which addresses these issues. As commonly happens with pre-release software, Microsoft identified two issues with the original release of Windows PowerShell RC1 that we wanted to address as quickly as possible. Microsoft re-released Windows PowerShell RC1 on May 5th, 2006 in order to fix these issues. One issue affected the digital signature verification on some file types such as msi and .vbs files. For the affected file types, signed files will appear to be unsigned and the publisher will be listed as unknown. Users will also be prevented from signing new files. A second issue prevented customers from installing Windows PowerShell on 64-bit machines running Windows Vista.
Information on using the PowerShell scripting Language can be obtained from the Getting Started guide, which is available as part of the PowerShell Documentation Pack (see Related Downloads below).

PowerShell discussions can be found in the microsoft.public.windows.server.scripting newsgroup. This is monitored by the Windows PowerShell team at Microsoft.
