The Contoso Learning Companion provides a touch-friendly baseline solution built on top of Office 365 and Windows 8, that developers can use to build out, providing users with an aggregated experience that would otherwise require them to access multiple sites via the browser.

The Contoso Learning Companion is a touch-friendly Windows sample application. It demonstrates how teaching and learning scenarios can be more effective with the help of Office 365 services and a modern Windows 8 application experience that eliminates the need to visit multiple Web sites representing different classes and study groups. The application (together with the Windows 8 and Office 2010 and 2013 SDKs) allows developers to easily build solutions for the education market. Although the native web experience provides ubiquitous access from any platform, it does not provide an ideal touch-friendly experience. The Learning Companion solves this issue by taking advantage of the new Windows 8 touch-friendly UI and by providing some client-side aggregation logic.
The rich client enables a touch-friendly experience for education scenarios, and it serves as a one-stop hub for students and teachers, providing easy access to classes, study groups, event schedules, lessons and assignments.
Within OneNote, sections are created for the teacher to input the required lessons and assignments for students to consume. Private groups are also created for each student—visible only to that student (and the teacher)—where they can keep their notes, work on assignments, and collaboratively work on assignments with teacher input. By using OneNote as the repository, the teacher is able to manage all student submissions at a glance.
The Contoso Learning Companion is provided to serve as a baseline framework, which developers can use to create tailored solutions for their customers. They can take advantage of Windows 8 app contracts to extend the experience, such as through the Search, File Picker, and Send To and Play To contracts. Developers can customize the look and feel with school colors or by integrating stock imagery as a background. They can also extend the UI by adding additional components, such as an existing news feed and other server-side data sources.
